![]() The situation is similar to what happened with the cancelled Superman project by the creators of Rogue Leader. Gregor Punchatz says that, “we poured everything we had into making the most awesome cinematic Janimation had ever created,” which the studio hoped “could help us compete with bigger players in the game trailer market at the time.” Unfortunately, due to the project’s secrecy and cancellation that never came to pass. Interestingly, elements of the project seem to have been re-used in Duke Nukem Forever, as the Octabrain enemy’s model is exactly the same. It would’ve featured Duke 3D’s iconic weapons such as the Freeze Ray and Shrinker, as well as the ability to rip an enemy’s arm off and use it as a melee weapon. The video isn’t actual gameplay but is an animated example of what Begins would’ve been like – third-person and almost Max Payne-like, although with the ability to target two enemies at the same time. Punchatz previously released some of the video in 2019 as part of a sizzle reel, but this is the first time the entire “vertical slice” trailer has been made available in full. Now animator Gregor Punchatz – who is best known for model work on movies such as Robocop and the monsters from the original Doom – has revealed the full “vertical slice” trailer his studio Janimation created for Duke Nukem Begins. ![]() During this time, both projects moved from 3D Realms to Gearbox, and Begins was put on hold – before apparently being cancelled altogether due to the rights issues surrounding the franchise. Duke Nukem Begins was set to be a third-person “origin story” and was originally supposed to have been Gearbox’s first game with the license before the ill-fated Duke Nukem Forever.ĭevelopment of Duke Nukem Begins supposedly began around 2007 and was halted in 2009, two years before the eventual release of Duke Nukem Forever in 2011. It was also the case with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 Sith Lords Restored Content Mod and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines Plus Patch, which required a minor re-think by the modders to add unused content. The full trailer for a cancelled Duke Nukem game has been released, thanks to the animator behind the project. Fine-tuning of the engine and renderer is also planned so that Duke’s unofficial story in this form can run on modern hardware without any problems.Ī new story is also in the works to fill in the gaps between what we know about the game and what we don’t, but the goal is to keep the project accurate to Duke Nukem pre-2003. ![]() According to the team, the main focus so far has been on rebuilding the first chapter, and we can already see the visual changes that have been made to the Las Vegas chapter so far. We shouldn’t expect the DNF2001 Restoration Project to be finished anytime soon, though, as an unfinished demo has been leaked. And what we wrote in the first paragraph, Gloomwood creator Dillon Rogers agrees. Even he tweeted “oh, what could have been” from it. He previously composed Duke’s iconic theme song for 3D Realms, Grabbag, and has now provided the previously unused trailer music for Duke Nukem Forever. The DNF2001 Restoration Project on ModDB has taken on a big task: Their goal is to complete the leaked (and aforementioned) 2001 build of Duke Nukem Forever to fill in the gaps, expand the story and direction, and make the blonde macho man’s game, which went through long development hell, undergone many engine and developer changes over a decade and a half, and received below-average reviews in 2011, playable from start to finish with minimal extra work.Ī teaser trailer video of what’s been completed so far has been released, and even Lee Jackson has joined the party.
